Holi in Kolkata: Where Gods Get a Rolls-Royce Ride.

Holi, renowned as the festival of colors, is celebrated across India with unmatched zeal and enthusiasm. In Kolkata, the festivities take on a distinctive flavor in the bustling neighborhood of Burrabazar, where the Rolls Royce Holi celebration has emerged as a highly anticipated annual event. Dating back to 1927, this traditional celebration is a magnificent spectacle featuring a Rolls-Royce car, used as Lord Krishna’s chariot.
At the heart of the event, stands the vintage Rolls-Royce car, formerly owned by the esteemed writer Rudyard Kipling. Kipling is thought to have sold the car to Kumar Ganga Dhar Bagla in 1927 after utilizing it for six years. Since then, the car—a unique Rolls-Royce variation with the chassis number #6UE—has served as a moving shrine for the deities Radha and Krishna at the Satyanarayan temple owned by the Bagla family, who is the primary organizer of this Holi celebration.
The procession commences on the 10th day of Fagun from the Satyanarayan Jee Temple on Kalakar Street, traversing across the Howrah Bridge and weaving through the streets of Burrabazar before reaching the Shri Ishwar Satyanarayanjee Temple on Mukharam Kanoria Road, where the deities are temporarily housed.
Enthusiastic devotees sway to the traditional beats of drums and cymbals, contributing to an atmosphere of spiritual bliss and joyous celebration. As the procession winds its way through the lanes of Burrabazar, onlookers shower it with gulal (colored powder) and flowers from the surrounding buildings.
Admiring the harmonious fusion of sanctity and magnificence as the vintage Rolls Royce carries the sacred essence of Radha-Krishna across Kolkata's bustling avenues is an unforgettable experience. Its importance as a symbol of reverence in Kolkata's traditional pantheon is further strengthened by the way the introspective atmosphere of Holi combines with its charming spirit to create a visual feast that is loved by both devotees and observers.
The whirlwind of vibrant hues and the rhythmic bhajan (devotional songs) create a multifaceted effect that inspires unrestrained delight and a sense of camaraderie. Beyond mere celebration, Kolkata's Rolls Royce Holi is a colorful tribute to India's rich cultural heritage, where traditional customs coexist harmoniously with contemporary revelry.
